Below the bunk bed was a sea

of legos, barbies and other debris

of childhood.

That was a time in which withstood all the stresses of adulthood.

Outside in the summer heat,

scooter down the chalk drawing-lined street past Toby and Tara asking for a treat.

Judge Judy as mother, the real one not around. And from father,

my voice was quiet and drowned due to the roaring videogame sounds.

All this made for an interesting background.

That bunk bed made for two, our safe spot amongst the hullabaloo.

Sometimes I wonder how we pushed through but all the innocence we shared, I cling to.

All the lip gloss

and dress up

and ponies

and secrets. The playing

and sneaking

and dancing

and singing. I cling to it all but I must ask you,

when was it

it all went askew?
